Ombudsman Reacts to Poor State in the Detention Centers

Tbilisi, 05.03.2006, ‘Media News’ – The ombudsman is concerned about the poor state of the jails. During February and March, the representatives of the Ombudsman’s Office conducted monitoring of the detention centers in the regions of Shida Kartli, Kvemo Kartli and Kakheti. The aim of this monitoring was studying the physical condition of the detention centers.

The results of the monitoring showed that the condition of the majority of jails is very poor: the buildings need urgent reconstruction; there is no heating or drinking water in most of the cells. Problems occur in the provision of food as well.

The Ombudsman thinks that the poor condition of the preliminary detention centers violates Human Rights.
