March 22, 2006

Editor-in-chief of Newspaper “Trialeti” Accuses Shida Kartli Prosecutor of Rape Attempt

Editor-in-chief of newspaper “Trialeti” Tinatin Vachadze accuses Shida Kartli District Prosecutor Mikheil Abuladze of attempted rape.

During the press conference held in Ombudsman’s office on March 17 Vachadze said that the incident took place at the end of February. The law enforcers were investigating her conflict with her mother-in-law at the time.
Vachadze says Abuladze threatened her with three years in prison in connection with her conflict with her mother-in-law if she told anyone about the incident. After the investigation of her and her mother-in-law’s conflict was over she decided to lodge a complaint against Abuladze.

Head of News Service of TV Station “Trialeti” Sopiko Reznichenko demanded immediate resignation of Abuladze and launch of a criminal case against him. Reznichenko says if Abuladze doesn’t resign he can influence the investigation.
As Vachadze’s lawyer Zaza Gigauri said, he has already explained to his client the extent of her responsibility if the accusations turn out to be false.

Gigauri also stated that the journalist has already sent the corresponding petition to Prosecutor General, State Chancellery and Ombudsman, Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee of Parliament.

The journalist’s statement will be studied by Ombudsman.
Shida Kartli District Prosecutor Mikheil Abuladze vehemently denies Vachadze’s charges.

“It’s shameful to make such statements, I have met her only twice in my life, once in the presence of Gori Prosecutor” –Abuladze said.
