Journalists in Kakheti Protest against the Arrest of their Colleagues in Minsk

Today, Journalists in Telavi protested against the arrest in Minsk of journalist Nino Giorgobiani and cameraman Giorgi Lagidze. The two were from the Public Broadcasting Corporation of Georgia.

Khatuna Gugulishvili, a Kakheti regional journalist with the ‘Mze’ broadcasting company, told the Human Right Information and Documentation Centre that the protest was organized in support of the Georgian journalists who are now Lukashenko’s ‘captives’. “We express our solidarity with Georgian journalists Nino Giorgobiani and Georgi Lagidze, whose present condition is not known by society here. We consider the arrest of the journalists, who arrived in Belarus to cover the demonstrations as bizarre. It is just plain terrorization. We ask for help from international organizations. We believe that only through their assistance is it possible to help the journalists”, said one of the organizers of the protest, Khatuna Guliashvili.

The representatives of different Human Rights organizations also joined the protest. “We condemn this act and demand the immediate release of the journalists”, stated representatives of the ‘Human Rights Information and Documentation Centre’ and the ‘Young Lawyers Association’.

At the present time, the correspondent from the ‘Moambe’ program and the cameraman remain detained in Minsk.
