Announcement of ‘Georgian Media Club’

March 31, 2006

Announcement of ‘Georgian Media Club’

The government continues attack on the freedom of expression. New target has been chosen – for that time TV Company ‘Imedi’. The rating of this TV Company, which remains more or less free nowadays, is increasing. At the same time, MP Giga Bokeria continues to make critical statements about ‘Imedi’, it is worth to mention that Bokeria’s interview last summer caused shutting down the political talk show  ‘At the edge of choice’, produced by TV Company ‘Mze’.

‘Georgian Media Club’ supports the statement made by Badri Patarkatsishvili. He is the first owner of TV Company, who openly started to talk about the problems, which almost every television has after the ‘Rose Revolution’. Talking about those problems loudly will help society and international community to realize what is happening in the field of freedom of expression in Georgia. On the other hand, the security of journalists will be protected better.

Unfortunately, the state reacted on Patarkatsishvili’s announcement inadequately. As one can guess, government is concerned about the growing rating of TV Company. Free media, as seen, is quite dangerous for the state just before the local elections.

According to the information, gained by ‘Georgian Media Club’, the government will try to implement financial raids in TV Company.

‘Georgian Media Club’ calls the government to act properly and to make adequate statements.
