Number of Illegal Rubbish Dumps Increasing in Zugdidi

An abandoned apartment block in Zugdidi has been transformed into a rubbish dump. Every day, employees from the environmental sanitation authority bring garbage to this site. According to the employees, they do so because of a request from a local inhabitant - Mogeli Gabisonia. “It does not make sense to us where we put this waste. This man just asked us to fill up those empty spaces here”, says one of the representatives of the environmental sanitation authority, not giving his name.

Inhabitants living near the rubbish dump complain about that it is unhygienic. They think that Gabisonia wants to take the land for himself. Neighbors also suspect that Gabisonia may have corrupt agreements with the local land management office.

Mogelia denies the accusations of the neighbors. However, he confirms that he asked the employees of environmental sanitation authority to dump trash on the site, because the abandoned house had changed into the ‘healthy’ environment for vermin.

The inhabitants of Ketskhoveli, Sichinava and Makharadze streets held a protest demanding an immediate reaction from the Zugdidi environmental sanitation authority. However, nobody from the authority has said or done anything. To solve the problem, the inhabitants have started collecting signatures.
