Ombudsman’s Office Discovers Human Rights Violations in Police Departments

Tbilisi, 28.04.2006, ‘Media News’ – The Ombudsman’s Office continues to monitor police departments in Tbilisi and other cities of Georgia.

Monitoring took place in Zugdidi, Poti, Senaki, Kutaisi and Zestaponi (west Georgia). In the eastern part of the country, police departments in Marneuli, Dmanisi and Bolnisi were checked. At the same time, the human rights situation was assessed in police departments in Tbilisi.

According to information from the Ombudsman’s Office, human rights violations and violations of the code of practice were reported in the Zugdidi and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti regions.

One person was arrested and beaten in the Bolnisi police department. According to the detainee, the police officers physically assaulted him during the arrest and nobody explained to him what his rights were.
