Suffering Population Ask for Assistance

The district of Lagodekhi faces ecological disaster due to the constant rains there. The rivers are flooding and ravaging the villages. Settlements and farmland have been covered in water in Apeni and Heretiskari. A variety of crops have been completely devastated.

The local inhabitants blame the government for being indifferent to their plight and intend to challenge this attitude by holding all night protests. “I have not got any shelter. The whole village is covered with water. We are left without beds to sleep in or other household things. Tamaz Godziashvili, the Governor of the region together with the District Governor, only arrived here in the afternoon with two tractors. I expressed my concern that the disaster has made us homeless – left without anything. I wondered what we should do with ourselves now. His response was humiliating. He said that he could not give us his salary and offered us four kilos of flour and some cooking oil. Is that any kind of aid or help when we have nothing at all?” asks Dodo Kapanadze, the mother of four children.

The victims state that they are trying to evacuate themselves from the village because the government is not giving them any assistance. The reality is that they cannot even get back to their homes because of the flood waters.
