IDPs Living in Kindergartens Protest Against Terrible Living Conditions

Yesterday, internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in the kindergartens of Zugdidi, blocked the main road - Freedom Street, demanding improved living conditions. According to them, they have been living in terrible conditions for thirteen years. Most of them do not even have access to drinking water or a sewage system. The lack of hygiene causes various infections amongst the inhabitants.

“We say nothing about the terrible rooms - my family lives with three invalids and two children. We live on the first floor of the kinder garden. We are afraid to wash the dishes or use the water for any other purpose, because it is very hard to carry water 100 meters by bucket. Also it is impossible to drink the water in the building. I am very surprised that the parents of the children are not protesting against the situation, their kids have been poisoned by the water in the kindergarten several times”, stated Anjela Khukhua, one of the IDPs.

According to protesters, they have contacted the administration of Gali, the sanitary services and other bodies several times and asked for help, but nobody pays attention to their problems.

“Everyone says that the building is not suitable for living in, so why we are living there and why is there a functioning kindergarten in the building?”

The protest lasted for one hour. No officials came to meet the protesters. The IDPs are concerned with the lack of attention from the government and threaten to hold massive protests.
