Drunk Police Officers Beat Up Zugdidi Citizen

On 10th May, Alexander Gvaramia was beaten up by unknown persons near his house. Later it transpired that his attackers where police officers. Levan Melania works with the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Police Department and Irakli Tirkia works for the Zugdidi Police Department. Alexander Gvaramia had several injuries and was moved to hospital. Doctors say that his condition is not yet stable.

The victim does not know the reason for the attack. The police officers themselves say that they were drunk and attacked Gvaramia without any real reason. Gvaramia’s neighbors think that the attack could be connected to his wife, Gina Kartozia, who was an active organizer of protests connected with the Zugdidi market. Several months ago, their daughter Mariam Gvaramia was also kidnapped. The kidnappers, according to the girl, demanded that the protests, organized by Gina Kartozia, be stopped.

The investigation of the case is underway.
