Tsalani Dies From Brutal Beating by Special Forces

Tbilisi. 25.05.06. Media News. This morning, Tsalani, who in August 2005 was beaten by officers with the Special Forces, finally died.

Last summer, four police officers brutally beat Tsalani after a visit by the Presidents of Georgia and Ukraine to Mestia.

The Public Defender of Georgia, Sozar Subari and the Young Lawyers Organization became interested in the incident. Sozar Subari demands that the Prosecutor in Mestia be held responsible, because he delayed looking into the case. “The victim, Tsalani, told me that he applied to the Prosecutor’s Office within 2 days of the incident. However, the Prosecutor states that he was contacted only after 22 days had passed. We found documentation proving that the victim applied to the Prosecutor’s Office two days after the beating. Thus, the four police officers and the Prosecutor must be punished”, declares Sozar Subar.
