NGOs Demand A Fair and Transparent Trial for Girgvliani’s Case

Tbilisi, 28.06.06, ‚Media News’ – NGO Coalition ‘Civil Society for Democratic Georgia’ Demands Fair and Transparent Discussion of Girgvliani’s Case and Punishment of the Criminals.

According to the coalition, it is well known that Girgvliani was murdered on the orders of high ranking officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The state tried to calm society and international organizations by arresting people who were personally involved in the murder. However, these arrested persons are being held in the best cells in prison.

The members of the coalition believe that the state is probably regretting that the case had such a large resonance in society and did not end in the normal way. The state was unable to falsely accuse Girgvliani and his friend of a gun attack. If the state had succeeded, the two victims would have been portrayed as a criminal group and the police officers as heroes.
