Refugees Live in Ruins

August 22, 2006

Antonio Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees has visited Zugdidi on the 19th of August. High Commissioner has visited IDPs from Abkhazia, who are living in the hospital building. IDPs were waiting for this meeting with a big hope; however they got disappointed – Antonio Guterres only stayed with them for ten minutes. High Commissioner has observed the conditions in which IDPs are living – the building is almost ruined, no sanitary or hygienic conditions exist, in small rooms together with small children, rats are living. The building has been renovated by ‘Save the Children’ this year; however it is very hard to notice it.

Zaza Gorozia, governor of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Levan Mikava, the head of Refugee Committee and other high rank officials welcomed Guterres in Zugdidi. UN High Commissioner for Refugees said that it is important to work out a plan of IDPs return and provide them good living conditions. Soon special commission on these issues will be created (not for the first time).
