Incident in the Conflict Zone

October 2, 2006

On the 30th September at nearly 17 o’clock gun shot was heard in the village of Shamgona in the Zugdidi district. Three-man group of the Zugdidi Police Department’s Subunit within Interior Ministry was carrying out patrolling in the village area. The group was moving around by ‘Vilisi’ car. They ran into a strange car in one of the roads near the forest in Shamgona. A person in the car opened fire at them; the fact resulted in several badly wounded policemen K. Txelidze and G. Gabedava. The third policeman K. Churghulia managed to lie down in the car. He then fired back and killed the criminal on the place. The policemen managed to call for help. The law enforcers immediately started to search the place, as the criminal’s car had already disappeared from the place. The fact makes it obvious that the killed person was not alone. They were looking for the criminal till midnight, but in vain. He might have rescued in the Gali district. The territory of Shamgona borders with the village of Tagiloni.

The wounded were immediately taken to the Zugdidi Central Hospital ‘Respublika’ where they were medically aided. Kakha Tkhelidze’s health condition is poor. He has a bullet in a spine, Gabedava is wounded in the arm, and Churghulia has a simple scratch on the neck. Tkhelidze has lost a lot of blood. He might be taken to Tbilisi in the nearest future.

As for the aggressor he turned out to be Zaza Shamugia, resident of the village of Nabakevi in the Gali district. He was suspected for armed attacks, kidnapping of the people and murdering. He has been sought for already four years in vain,

Attack on the policemen is not a strange thing for the people in the village of Shamgona, Zugdidi district. Three policemen were badly wounded during the attack in January, 2004, and two policemen were killed and one badly wounded in the car on the 31st January, 2005.
