Demonstration in Poti Port

October 3, 2006

On the 2nd October several dozen people gathered in front of the Poti Port Administrative Board building. They complained that some dangerous chemical substances, such as aluminum oxide is being loaded down from the ships in the port and it is dangerous to people’s health. According to the organizer of the demonstration G. Maskhulia’s statement, the number of blood, oncological and endocrinological diseases increased in Poti. (Goiter is very frequent among school-children).

The Head of the Public Relation’s Department Of the Poti Port stated to the participants of the demonstration and journalists that they had already applied to Tbilisi Ecological-inflectional Research Centre. As he defined, in the case if the centre confirms that aluminum oxide is dangerous to people and thus creates ecological threat to them, they will certainly take adequate measures.

The demonstration was preventive and it dismissed in several minutes.
