Anti Georgian Campaign in Russian Federation Endowed Human Life

October 18, 2006

Tbilisi. 18.10.06. Media-news. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, on October 16, 2006, 26 people were escorted to Moscow from St. Petersburg’s police custody to deport them from Russian Federation to Georgia. Tengiz Togonidze, a 46-year-old Georgian citizen was among passengers who suffered from Asthma.

Although his health was worsening, Mr. Tengiz Togonidze was deprived from medical assistance and even from being on fresh air during his two weeks' detention.

Only after the intervention of the Georgian consulate, the medical assistance was provided to him, but in vain as it was too late.

There were no elementary conditions for detainees during long-time journey as well. The passengers stated that it was impossible to open the window. Mr. Togonidze felt bad during the journey, but Russian policemen did not pay any attention to him.

Having arrived at Domodzedovo International Airport in Moscow, his health worsened. Unfortunately it was impossible to save his life and he died in the morning of October 17.

Based on the cases Georgian Foreign Affairs Ministry declares that Russian Government carries out the process without any legal basis. The most part of deported Georgian citizens had valid visas and all other necessary documents. Legal residents are removed from their houses and taken to police departments, where they endure inhuman and cruel treatment and are left without medical assistance. Above mentioned is the violation of Basic Human Rights and Freedom, International Regulations and Procedures.

The death of Tengiz Togonidze is a proof of the abovementioned situation and indicates to the terrible conditions of ethnic Georgians in Russia.

Foreign Affairs Ministry expresses its concern about the tragedy and condoles with the relatives on loss of Mr. Togonidze.

Georgia denounces ignoring all essential Humanitarian Norms by the Russian Government and categorically demands to halt anti-Georgian hysteria and respect Georgians, who are forced to leave in Russian federation.
Georgia calls for Russia to the defense of the international documents on human rights, such as “European convention of human rights and basic freedoms”, its main principles and regulations.
The Georgian Government also calls for the International Organizations and World Democratic Commonwealth to respectively estimate inhuman and xenophobic actions from Russia and urge from Russia to the defense of human rights
