MPs Demand Bacho Akhalaia to Be Resigned

October 30, 2006

Tbilisi. 30.10.06. Media news. MPs Konstantine Guntsadze, Kakha Kukava and Gia Tortladze demand to set up a parliamentary commission to investigate current situation in Penitentiary System.

According to them, torture in the prisons would never end until Bacho Akhalia is the head of the system. MPs demanded information about current situation in the prisons form the Public Defender.

According to Konstantine Guntsadze, prisoners in the jails are inhumanly treated. They are beaten, tortured and degraded. "It all happens in the twenty-first century. Bacho Akhalaia has committed much more crimes than anybody else. Until he is head of the Penitentiary System, prisoners' torture will never end in Georgia,'-stated Konstantine Guntsadze.

Kakha Kukava declared that, though long time passed since famous prison riot, the case has not been investigated yet.

"We think that parliamentary commission should be set up to investigate the facts. Unless corresponding materials are produced by the Prosecutor's Office, Parliament should start to discuss the case itself,"-added Kakha Kukava.

Gia Tortladze stated that Bacho Akhalaia should be resigned immediately.
