To President of Georgia

November 13, 2006

To President of Georgia Mr. Mikheil Saakashvili

Address from representatives of Georgian nongovernmental organizations and journalists.

21 year old student and successful soccer player Giorgi Mikiashvili was detained by patrol police on October 229, 2005. During his arrest the police officers severely beat him. Physical abuse of Mikiashvili continued in the preliminary detention cell, as a result he got concussion of the brain.

Later Giorgi’s health even farther deteriorated. According to the preliminary conclusion made by the prison hospital’s doctors he was in reactive state, therefore he was transferred to Republican Prison Hospital.

President of psycho-rehabilitation center “Empathy” Mariam Jishkariani studied Giorgi Mikiashvili’s condition, according to her tests, Giorgi Mikiashvili is in acute delirious state, he’s got a closed craniocerebral trauma and concussion of the brain. Both Ms Mariam Jishkariani and Head of Prison Hospital’s Psychiatric Department Tengiz Memarne believe that Giorgi Mikiashvili, who’s currently kept in Rustavi prison #6, should be thoroughly examined and put into specialized clinic for farther treatment, however, to this very day it’s not the case.

Elene Tevdoradze, the Head of Parliamentarian Human Rights and Civil Integration  Committee confirms the fact of  Giorgi’s health deterioration as well.

Court cannot be held due to the defendant’s condition, his case has already been sent to European Court, but will Giorgi survive till the European Court is able to start hearing his case? Instead of finding out who tortured Giorgi the Prosecutor Office demands 6 year prison term for him.

We wonder whether Giorgi is punished because he’s a brother of journalist and whether it’s all done to silence us.
We ask you to get interested in that case so that the experts are able to establish Giorgi’s diagnosis and he can be treated in an appropriate way. Don’t sacrifice the life of a young man in order to defend the dignity of Prosecutor Office and patrol police!
You are our president and we don’t want to live in a country where the young people are tortured and killed.
