Command of the CIS peacekeeping forces call the allegations of Georgian media “inappropriate”

January 9, 2007

Command of CIS peacekeeping forces located in Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone is calling on conflicting sides to prevent further escalation of tensions in the conflict zone.
This information is disseminated by information-analytical web portal “Kavkazskii Uzel” (Caucasian Knot).

In addition the command is calling on Georgian media to refrain from allegations when reporting on the incident which occurred in village Ganmukhuri located at the administrative border between Georgia and unrecognized republic of Abkhazia.

One Georgian policeman has been killed and another wounded as a result of an attack on the check-point of Georgian police in village Ganmukhuri of Zugdidi district on January 5. This has led to further tensions in the conflict zone, particularly in neighboring Gali district which is controlled by the Sokhumi government. According to Georgian media the attackers were soldiers of Abkhazian official armed forces. Georgian media also criticized passiveness of CIS peacekeeping forces.

Assistant to the commander of the peacekeeping forces lieutenant-colonel Alexander Diordiev stated that “allegations of Georgian media are out of place” before the direct and concealed participants of the attack are not identified and that a detailed investigation of the incident is being conducted.
