Research Finished on the Case of HIV/Aid infected Mariam Kintsurashvili

January 9, 2007

Control Department of the Medical and Doctors’ Activities within the Georgian Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Welfare finished its research on the death of ten-year-old Mariam Kintsurashvili. She died of HIV/Aids in August last year.

Lado Kepuladze, the head of the aforementioned department within the Ministry, said to GHN, several violations were discovered during the research.

“The research estimated that state law on donors is breached and the medical personnel’s activities do not meet the demands of the legislation. We considered it is necessary to send our materials to the local law enforcement bodies in order to launch investigation on the case. Medical personnel have not only dodged their responsibility, but they have committed crime. Thus, the Ministry is not the only body to carry out investigation. Prosecutor’s office must involve the investigation, as well,” said Kepuladze.

Kintsurashvili got infected in Kutaisi Children’s Hospital after having been transfused blood. She was four years old that time. On August 11 2006 she died at the age of ten.

The Ministry of health defined that the reason for infection was trio plasma she was transfused. The trio plasma was drawn from the HIV/Aids infected donor.
