Human Rights Center Defeats Gurjaani Administrative Board in Court

January 16, 2007

Two weeks ago, representatives of the Human Rights Center’s Kakhaeti Office brought a suit to the Gurjaani District Court. The suit demanded the court to order the Gurjaani Administrative Board to issue public information to the center immediately. The information was about what positions they have in the department, who, when and on what basis were people appointed to their positions; whether vacancy announcements were published or not.

Human Rights Center’s Kakheti office claimed that the officials at the administrative board were appointed to their positions through blatant violation of law. Thus, the board blocked the public information for the non-governmental organization.

Shalva Mchedlishvili, a judge for the Gurjaani District Court, satisfied the Human Rights Center’s suit. The court ordered the Administrative Board to issue public information immediately.

The Gurjaani Administrative Board ignored other demands of the representatives of the NGO besides the issuing of public information. Thus, representatives of the Human Rights Center appealed to the Gurjaani District Prosecutor’s office and demanded to launch a criminal case on hindering the public information by officials from the Administrative Board. People from NGO claimed that those officials have abused their power.
