Traders at the Underground Station “Gotsiridze” Threaten to Hold Demonstrations

January 23, 2007

Tbilisi. 23.01.07. Media News. The Tbilisi Metropolitan Administration demanded the traders to remove their stalls from the area near the Gotsiridze station. Nearly seventy-five traders traded there and most of them were IDPs from Abkhazia.

The Administration warned them one month ago and fixed January 27 as a last day for their trading in the area.

Officials from the Pres Service Department of the Metropolitan Administration informed the Media News that there is no legal document on the basis of what the traders could trade in the area. “Our administration has not offered them any alternative place to go. This territory is a strategic object and traders, standing near the entrance, hinder the subway to work,” said Nana Tsertsvadze, the head of the press service department.

Traders demand alternative place to go on with trading. Otherwise they threaten to hold protest demonstrations. “We doubt the Metropolitan Administration is supported by the City Hall,” said the traders.
