Suitor Peasants Were Paid Money for Grapes

February 12, 2007

The board of the Gurjaani based wine-factory, Senakuri Ltd, paid several peasants the money for the grapes the factory bought in September.

Villagers, having arrived from the various villages in the Kakheti region, demanded the director of the factory to pay money for their grape during six months. They held protest demonstrations several times. They also applied to the local authority and spent nights at the factory gate, in vain.

Two weeks ago, several peasants applied to the Human Rights Center’s Kakheti Office and lawyers for the center prepared a suit for them to appeal to the court. The peasants were demanding the money for their grape as well as a compensation for their moral and material damage. The director of the Senakuri factory paid villagers the money before the court discussed the case.
