Military Trainings in Abkhazia

February 20, 2007

Military trainings were launched in Abkhazia de-facto Republic. According to the Gali Administrative Board, the trainings are being carried out on the Gumista polygon. Reservist units are taking part in the HQ-mobilization military trainings.

Tornike Kilanava, deputy Gamgebeli (governor) of the Gali district, said that the military trainings were caused by the approaching parliamentary elections that are going to be held soon. “Separatist regime of Abkhazia takes every effort to threaten the local Georgian population. Their goal is to make the people go to the elections forcibly,” said Kilanava.

The people, who cross Enguri Bridge to get into Samegerelo, speak about the mobilization of the Abkhazian military forces.  Marina Shamatava, a resident of the Gali district, said that the block posts are particularly reinforced in the area. “I am from Abkhazia but it has become too difficult to travel for the last time. We were allowed to go after a long time and they made us pay ten lari,” said Shamatava.

According to Kilanava, the trainings will last until March 4, the fixed day of the elections.
