A Family with Seven Members Are Left Homeless

February 28, 2007

Zurab Mikeladze, a resident of Gonio, has spent seven days in the yard of a village hospital with his seven family members. The family was damaged by natural disaster and the Khelvachauri District Administration lodged them in there two years ago. Some other families together with the Mikeladzes were evicted from the hospital building after it was privatized. Though the families were warned one week earlier, nobody offered them an alternative place to move in.

The Mikeladzes used to appeal to the Administration and demanded to register a new plot on them on the basis of Geologist’s conclusion. The officials did not satisfy their demand because of implementing the reform on the land in the country. However, the reform has not implemented completely.

The Mikeladzes appealed to the Court but the process was postponed several times. Bakur Bolkvadze, a lawyer for the Human Rights Center’s Batumi office said that the administrative arguments cannot be postponed. Despite that, the opposite party, Khelvachauri Administration, said that they need time to investigate the situation carefully.

Representatives of the Khelvachauri Administrative Board gave the same arguments to Nazi Tsiteladze–the question needs thorough discussion. She was promised that her family would be granted with temporary shelter until the problem is finally resolved. The Administrative Board asked three-days time to find alternative accommodation for the family. Today the Mikeladzes have to spend the night in the street.
