Abolishment of the Transport Regulation Commission Might Result Into Unemployment of Hundreds of Georgian Sailors

March 2, 2007

Abolishment of the Transport Regulation Commission caused the delay in the activities of the Batumi Navy Department.

Sailors from Batumi, who have faced difficulties after the commission was abolished, demand explanations.

One part of the sailors said that they have passed exams and demand their certificates; however, there are only guards in the building of the Navy Department. The guards inform the visitors about the liquidation of the department.

Valeri Imnaishvili, Deputy Director of the Navy Department, said that unless the department renews its activities, a lot of sailors will be unemployed.

Murman Dumbadze, member of the Adjara Supreme Council from the opposition party, commented on the situation too. “The Georgian President made the decision spontaneously. He does not know the upcoming results of his decision,” said Dumbadze. According to him, the decision violates the labor contracts with the sailors, which was drawn according to the International Convention. Besides that, the protection of the sailors’ legal rights are also ignored which was regulated under the Georgian Law on Navigation.

Republican Party demands to restore the department because “every day is equal to lost millions of dollar for Georgian budget and every Georgian citizen.”

Georgian Parliament should make final decision regarding the abolishment of the Transport Regulation Commission and Navy Department.
