Project “Prevention of Torture in Georgia” Has Been Presented

March 13, 2007

Today, a presentation of the project “Prevention of Torture in Georgia” was held in the Tbilisi-Marriot.

The project was financed by the European Union and is implemented by three partner organizations: Southern Caucasian Department of the “International Reform of Prison”, local fund of the Federation “Global Initiative in Psychiatry” and Geneva “Association for Prevention of Torture”.

The project aims to assist the corresponding bodies to carry out monitoring in prisons, pre-trial detention cells at police stations, psychiatric institutions, military disciplinary detention settings and children’s rehabilitation institutions.

Georgian Public Defender, Sozar Subari, considers Georgia has succeeded by ratification of 2005 UN Convention against Torture. He added that the state parties should create a national mechanism to prevent torture through their cooperation with UN.
