Protest Demonstration Might Move In Front of the Parliament

March 14, 2007

Today, IDPs residing in Kutaisi held large-scaled demonstration in front of the City Prosecutor’s Office. They demanded the Defense Ministry to abolish its decree under which IDPs from Abkhazian should return the money they had received in 1999-2004 as a pension.

IDPs have been invited to the Kutaisi District Prosecutor’s office for two weeks already and blame them for having damaged the state budget. “Their behavior is beyond ethic norms. Initially we thought they would understand how unreasonable their accusations were and let us alone. However, they continue their impudent activities. Let them invite all IDPs together and send us to the prison. We will not pay a tetri. Why should we pay it as we have no fault,” said an IDP Shorena Chakvetadze.

The prosecutor’s office demands the IDPs to pay 3 000 GEL as a fine. If they do not pay the money, IDPs will be sent to two-month pre-trial detention. Several days ago, Kutaisi law enforcers detained mentally disabled IDP, Vitali Gavasheli. The detainee’s relatives have been demanding to release the person until now in vain.

According to the spread information, dozens of IDPs might share Gavasheli’s fate. There is a list of 270 IDPs is in the Kutaisi Prosecutor’s Office who have debts to the state budget.

IDPs from other regions joined the demonstration held by NGO Egalitarian Institute. They said that large-scaled demonstration will be held in front of the Georgian Parliament and Ministry of Defense.
