Court Bailiffs Hindered Journalists’ Work in Front of Supreme Court Building

March 20, 2007

On March 20 Supreme Court bailiffs hindered journalists’ work in front of the Supreme Court building; the journalists were covering the protest action of nongovernmental organization Egalitarian Institute.

The bailiffs stood in front of cameras and told the photographers to stop filming. The bailiffs said the representatives of mass media were hindering the traffic; as a result a small squabble took place between the journalists and bailiffs.

Members of Egalitarian Institute were protesting against the March 19 ruling of Court of Appeal concerning the 30 day incarceration of one of the members of that organization Jaba Jishkariani.

Jishkariani was sentenced to 30 days in prison for disrespecting the judge during the trial of 14 year old Giorgi Zerekidze.
Members of Egalitarian Institute have started a hunger strike and demand the releasing of Jishkariani.
