Journalist Lasha Berulava Denies Threatening His Colleague

April 5, 2007

Journalist Lasha Berulava refutes the accusations of Editor of Poti-based newspaper “Tavisupali Sitkva” Eliso Janashia according to which he and his wife Lali Gelenava (press secretary of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Governor) were threatening her.

Berulava told news agency “Pirveli” that there were no threats or pressuring of Eliso Janashia on his or his wife’s’ part.

“It was just an unpleasant conversation, which was caused by the fact that Janashia used the story that my wife had told her during a private conversation in her newspaper article as an official comment from my spouse. I’m ready to answer any questions in connection with this case, including the questions from law enforcers” – Lasha Berulava told “Pirveli”.

Berulava says the private conversation between Gelenava and Janashia concerned the incident between the Head of the Governor’s Security Service and Editor of Zugdidi-based newspaper “Ghia Boklomi” Ilia Chachibaia.

On February 12 Eliso Janashia applied to Public Defender and asked him to react to the fact that she had been pressured by Lasha Berulava and Lali Gelenava. Public Defender Sozar Subari contacted Prosecutor General’s Office.

On March 29 Public Defender was contacted by Prosecutor General’s Office and informed that based on his application the Zugdidi Department of Ministry of Internal Affairs had launched a preliminary investigation over preventing Eliso Janashia from performing her professional duties.
