Public Defender’s Reaction on President’s Initiative

May 3, 2007

The Georgian Public Defender appreciates statements of the Georgian President, Mikheil Saakakshvili which he made at the meeting of Georgian National Security Council on April 23 2007. The Public Defender states that he is ready to support the implementation of the peace keeping program in the Tskhinvali District.

Georgian President called upon everybody to make concrete suggestions and proposals regarding the initiative. Thus, the Public Defender thinks to start Public Defender’s regional office in the district. It will support the welfare and security of all local residents-ethnic Ossetians and ethnic Georgians. Protecting of their rights and freedom will avoid any kind of conflict; it will also defend the boundaries and future of our country.

Public Defender thinks that human rights protection will be a standpoint of the future peace negotiations and peaceful solution of current conflict situation in the area.

The Public Defender petitioned to the Georgian Prime-Minister, Zurab Noghaideli and asked him to support the establishment of the regional office of the Georgian Public Defender.
