Military Training Damages Population

May 7, 2007

Population of the Adigeni district has lived in vague and dangerous situation lately. Villagers wake up with deafening gun-shooting followed by cock-crowing in the morning.

“Can you tell us whether it is a cannon or some other terrible thing that produces that horrible voice? Everything shakes when it fires. We have been told they are carrying out military training there,” said Mtvarisa Macharashvili, a resident of the village of Khevasheni in Adigeni district.
Local people say that houses have collapsed after explosions.

Military trainings have started on Orfolo Polygon. Last year Akhaltsikhe district population complained because of trainings and now Adigeni District population joined their complaints too.

Two weeks ago, Human Rights Center’s Akhaltsikhe Office petitioned to the press service department of the Defense Ministry. The center demanded the information about the boundaries of the area where military trainings must be carried out. However, they have not received any information yet.

Adigeni population is concerned regarding the situation and urges the government for help.
