Editor for Newspaper “Gali” Was Beaten in Abkhazia

May 14, 2007

Nugzar Salakaia, editor for the newspaper “Gali”, was beaten by unidentified people. The incident happened in the area of self-proclaimed Abkhazian Republic.

Tornike Kilanava, a representative of the Abkhazian Autonomous Republic, stated that the incident was connected with an article published in the newspaper “Gali”. The three Georgian students (who were released by Abkhazian side media.ge) were mentioned as hostages of the Abkhazian people in it.

The same article read that the reconciliation of the two sides can be reached by Abkhazian and Georgian students and the Abkhaz side cannot understand that they are threatened by Russia and not by Georgia. Kilanava said that Salakaia was severely beaten and placed in the intensive care unit of one of hospitals in Sokhumi.

“Gali’’ has been published in Abkhazia for five years already, though it has experienced many delays. Only 35-40 issues could have been published so far. The newspaper is published in Georgian, Russian and Megrelian languages.
