In Sokhumi Research on the Access to Information in Abkhazia Was Presented

July 18, 2007

“Research on the Access to the Information in Abkhazia and Its Influence on Public Life”-it was the title of the report presented on July 17 in Sokhumi.

The project was implemented by the international non-governmental organization ‘ARTIKLE 19’ together with Sokhumi Media Club.

The report, prepared by the regional coordinator of the ‘ARTIKLE 19’, Lutgard Hammerer, demonstrated the results of the social research that reveals the influence of informational accessibility (more precisely the information from the governmental bodies) or blocking of the information on people residing in Abkhazia.

The report stated that in Abkhazia “Civil society is very active and there are various media sources in the area.”

“Public organizations and journalists try to introduce the governmental bodies with the demands and problems of the society in order to encourage the corresponding bodies to focus their attentions on most urgent problems. There are some positive initiatives in the field and we hope to fulfill them,” stated the report.

The report provides several conclusions and recommendations that aim at making the information accessible for the society.

Aleksandre Stranichkin, de-facto Vice-Premier, Maxim Gvinjia, de-facto Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, as well as representatives of the de-facto president’s administration, non-governmental organizations and media sources attended the presentation.
