Condemneds for Sandro Girgvliani’s Assassination Have Their Penalty Mitigated

Georgian Supreme Court mitigated the penalty of the condemneds for Sandro Girgvliani’s assassination.

Cassation Court sentenced Geronti Alania to seven year and six months imprisonment instead of previous eight-year-imprisonment that was concluded by Appeal Court.

As for Aleksandre Ghachava, Avtandil Aftsiauri and Mikheil Bibiluridze, they will serve six years and six months instead of previous seven years.

In addition to that, the Cassation Court dropped criminal prosecution against the condemneds according to the Georgian Criminal Code, Article 187, Section I. The latter states that the supposition cannot be used as a ground for punishment and verdict shall be passed based on valid proofs.

On July 27, Criminal Chamber within the Georgian Supreme Court discussed the cassation suits on the case without court hearing.

The criminal case against condemneds was sent to the Supreme Court for discussion in January 30 2007.

We would remind the readers that Sandro Girgvliani was murdered on January 27, 2006 in Tbilisi. Officials from the Department for Constitutional Security, Avtandil Aftsiauri, Aleksandre Ghachava and Mikheil Bibiluridze, were sentenced to seven-year-imprisonment and Grigol Alania was to serve eight years in prison for the crime.
