Late Control

September 25, 2007

Most of petrol and gas stations have been closed in Samtskhe-Javakheti. On September 13 four people died as a result of explosion in petrol station in Akhaltsikhe. After the accident corresponding bodies started to raid the petrol and gas stations to find out whether they comply with technical standards.

Georgian Prime-Minister Zurab Noghaideli discussed the problem at the governmental meeting and then ordered the Economical Department to raid petrol stations. On September 17 representatives of the Technical Supervision Inspection arrived in Akhaltsikhe for the purpose. 27 petrol and four gas stations stopped working in the district.

Giorgi Kapanadze, specialist for the Akhaltsikhe Municipality Department for Economics and Infrastructure, said that “all owners of the petrol stations are ordered to introduce the head of the Gori Patrol Police Department with complete technical documentation on their stations. The station which will receive positive answer after raid will be empowered to continue its activities.”

Kapanadze explained that petrol station should be located 25-30 meters away from residential buildings and 18 meters away from the road.

However, none of petrol stations are located more than three meters away from the road.
