Two Prisoners Die in Batumi Jail #3

October 24, 2007

Two prisoners died in Batumi jail #3. They were in bad health which caused their death. The medical histories of the two prisoners prepared by the Batumi Republic Hospital show extensive similarities: intestinal bleeding, acute anemia, chronic hepatitis C, liver cirrhosis and acute liver and kidney failure.

Prisoner Badri Doladze lived in the Ozurgeti region and Avtandil Beridze at Mtisdziri Street. Beridze was arrested because of attaining a large quantity of narcotics. Dolidze was 44 years old and Beridze 47 years old.

The Adjara office of the Human Rights Centre expresses its deep concern over their deaths and demands better conditions for the prisoners whose health is in danger.” They should have been receiving medical attention and not be in jail. The court had to take the state of their health into consideration and not send them to prison. But the court decided in the contrary and therefore we now have such a deplorable result.”

The prisoners died in Batumi Republic Hospital. Prisoner Badri Dolidze was admitted to the hospital on September 26 and he died on October 3, as for Avtandil Beridze, he was taken to the hospital on October 17 and died the next day.
