“Resurrected” Majority MPs or Lazy Cons

Based on Sociological Survey, absolute majority of voters does not know who the majority MP from his/her is district. 963 people out of 1 385 interviewed respondents think that it is not necessary to have an MP from each district. They claim that these people will do nothing more than acquiring property in their district and interfering in the activities of the local government.
Salaries Were Increased in Municipality Boards and Public Officials Started to Drive Luxurious Cars

Public Officials from Gori have taken it upon themselves to increase their salaries and they have started driving luxurious cars. Before that Davit Kirkitadze, leader of National Movement, the leading party, decreased the salaries of the officials from self-government bodies and even made reduce their standard to driving inexpensive cars. However, the shoe is now on the other foot and it is making hay whilst the sun shines. For example, last year the personnel of the Kutaisi City Hall was fired because of their lifestyles and personal” welfare” Following this, public officials in Gori took notice and reduced their salaries to the lower limit and even kept their finer cars out of public view.

Instead of borrowed 2 400 USD the victim of the swindle web is demanded to pay 210 thousand USD. Criminal group are operating with almost a sense of impunity – leaving many families homeless with various cons. They are going unpunished. However, there is still hope for justice as some of the victims have directly appealed to the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office for help.
Really: Poverty Reduction in 50-Days-after-5-Years

With political fanfare the Georgian President Regional Governors were ordered to implement a 50-day poverty reduction program in various Georgian regions. However, this daunting task may be easier said than done and locals aver that if the governors are not successful it will not have an impact on the governors – as they will not be punished for their shortcoming. The program is more about rhetoric than reality so few will really be disappointed.
Police Harasses Roma People because of “Ethnicity”

Those of the Roma ethnicity residing in the village of Leninovka in Dedoplistskaro District are blaming local police officers for harassing them on their ethnic background. They claim that law enforcers fabricated materials in making a criminal case and even insulted the Roma when they showed up at the police station to find out about the situation. They were physically kicked out of the station by the police. The Roma claim that their rights have been and continue to be abused, and that this is because of their ethnic group. They are urging international organizations to come to their assistance. Otherwise, they will walk to Tbilisi with their children and begin protesting in front of the office of the Council of Europe.

The sorted history of how eight families were deprived of their property by a government that has forgotten its responsibilities! Eight families residing in Pushkini Street # 13 in Batumi are now homeless. Their homes were auctioned off under the banner of privatization. No consideration was given to the fact that they had documents supporting their property rights by district board that previously existed. These documents stipulated that the now exiled families were to receive alternative flats in newly constructed residential buildings. However, the territory was sold out without any responsibilities.

The union 21st Century responded to the consumer’s rights day on the 15th of March with the publication of a research on consumers’ rights in Georgia.
Nino Burjanadze-MP through Majority System of the Canceled Elections

Changes Resulting from Constitution Amendments

There are no more places for Abkhazian majority MPs in the Georgian Parliament Amendments to the Constitution were supported by 152 MPs and voted against by 2 MPs. The amendments aimed to increase the number of majority MPs in the Georgian parliament. However, opposition parties protested the change before it was adopted, even boycotting the vote.
Police Seized List of Supporters of the Political Movement “Tavisufleba”

On March 9 a list of 30,000 supporters of the Political Movement “Tavisufleba” disappeared from the Zugdidi-Tbilisi Central highway. Near Abasha distinct two unidentified people stopped the driver of the mini-bus as it was traveling towards Tbilisi and seized the documents from him by force. Regional representatives of the “Tavisufleba” have already appealed to the Abasha district police station to investigate a politically motivated holdup.
Budget Increases at the Expense of Drug-Addicts

The total amount of the money transferred to the national budget as a result of imposed fines from both recreational drug users and hard core addicts has totaled more than 14 million GEL. Fines are based on two articles in acting Georgian legislation. Experts consider the courts are ordered from above to impose fines on addicts. Various allowances envisaged under the current legislation on drugs, have been removed from the draft law. It appears that the motivation is to increase fines four fold.

Fighting poverty is claimed to be a main reduction of the Georgian government. Much has been said, especially in promises made in the run-up to presidential elections and now in the countdown to parliamentary elections. It is debatable, however, if the rhetoric is close to the reality.
Not Guilty Findings in Batumi

Courts of Adjara Autonomous Republic have not passed any verdicts of not guilty in the last two years. According to official statistics the number of plea-bargains has been increased. “I have not seen anyone found not guilty in the courts as of yet. How can we speak about justice in such an unjust country,”- it is the collective attitude of Batumi residents when it comes to situation that now exists in the judiciary system.

Draft Law on Drugs: A Step Forward or Pre-election Hype

Why and for whom was the draft law drawn up? Supposedly, there are 250 thousand drug-abusers living in Georgia. Experts think the aim of the current law that is to punish drug addict is one that is being currently discussed in various committees of the Georgian Parliament. Who is eager to classify drug-abusers into drug dealers? Why cannot non-governmental organizations accept the draft law at face value? And in general what will the draft law really make any difference in this sphere?

Organization “Reporters without Borders” launched the first International Online Free Expression Day on March 12. The freedom of word needs to be protected in on-line editions too. After the famous events of November 2007 it was evident that the opposition was abused on on-line forums. The photo or video materials of the November 7th crackdown gradually disappeared. Not too long ago, the newspaper “Basta” published an article about internet-censorship. We want to introduce our reader with the same article as well.

Dispute on transfer and barter is still under way Batumi City Hall is in a property dispute with “Sheremeti Ltd” located on # 16 Firosmani Street in Batumi. The Batumi City Hall annulled the resolution based on which Sheremeti received 277 sq. meters of non-agricultural property in exchange for other territory.

On October 20, 2006 Russian policemen arrested thirty-one-year-old Lia Shioshvili, mother of four children in her own house in Ruza, Russia. Without having informed anyone they locked the pregnant woman in the district police isolator for preliminary detention along with her young children.
Demonstration of Employed Women

On March 8 women from Batumi held a demonstration and demanded to introduce amendments to the Labor Code and to protect the rights of the employed people. Representatives of the Trade Union sent a petition to the Georgian President with the above-mentioned demands.
