Gia Tortladze: Government Persecutes Mikhail Kareli because of ”Political Views”

February 15, 2008
Gia Tortladze, MP and member of political movement “the Movement for United Georgia” considers that Mikhail Kareli, former governor of Shida Kareli Region was placed on the list of political prisoners whose release is one of the demands of the United Opposition not by chance, because Tortladze concludes that Kareli is also a prisoner who was arrested because of his political views.

Tortladze told Medianews (a Georgian news agency) that Mikhail Kareli had been working as the governor of Shida Kartli for years and no one had made any claims against him. It was only after he told that he was planning to become a member of the party established by Irakli Okruashvili, former Minister of Defense of Georgia. He subsequently resigned from his post and then the government of Mikhail Saakashvili started persecuting him.

Tortaldze now says that the inhabitants of Shida Kartli were not content with Kareli, but Tortaldze now tries to justify himself by saying that “if Kareli was misusing his powers and committing crimes, Saakashvili and not Irakli Okuashvili, friend of Kareli must then take responsible for the deeds of him and his subordinates.”

Gia Tortladze states that everyone is free to express his or her political beliefs and if any authority commits a crime, the government must openly share the facts of the alleged crime and does not talk about the crime in general terms.
