“Inter RAO UES” And Georgia Signed Memorandum on Agreement Regarding “Enguri Hydro Electro Station”

January 12, 2009

Russian Company “Inter RAO UES” announced that they have signed memorandum on agreement with Georgia concerning efficient exploitation of “Enguri Hydro Electro Station”.

The document, published on the official website of the company, is signed by Evgeni Dod, chairperson of the “Inter RAO UES” and Aleksandre Khetaguri, Ministry of Energy of Georgia; the memorandum was signed in Tbilisi.

The document states that parties have agreed on preparing at least 10-year-program of joint and efficient management of the hydro-electro station. According to the “Inter RAO UES,” representatives of the Russian company had met officials from energy management agencies in Georgia and Abkhazia before signing the document.

The Ministry of Energy of Georgia does not make official statement about the agreement.

Representatives of the ministry reported to Medianews that if they decide to make official statement about the agreement, all media sources will be informed about it.

Representatives of the parliamentary opposition express their protest regarding the agreement.

MP Paata Davitaia requests explanations from Aleksandre Khetaguri and intends to raise the question at the next meeting of anti-crisis council. He added that information published on Russian websites is not always reliable; however, he requests the minister of energy of Georgia to provide them with true information. “Enguri Hydro Electro Station has strategic importance for Georgia and similar issues should not be resolved together with Russia in secret from people,” said the MP.
