Peter Semneb – It Is Early to Speak about Extending the EU Mission

July 31, 2009

Peter Semneb, representative of the EU in the South Caucasus, gave interview to Georgian journalists about his meetings yesterday in Sokhumi.

He stated he had met Sergei Baghapsh, Sergei Shamba, Stanislav Lakoba and other representatives of society in Sokhumi.

Semneb mentioned he wanted to see the situation after the UN mission left the territory and how the EU could continue working for stability.

According to the representative of the EU, some issues were focused during the conversation which should be treated carefully.

Semneb was asked if Abkhazian de-facto government was ready to allow international observers in the territory, and he answered that all sides should be interested to have the mission in the conflict zone.

“Our aim is to send observers to conflict zones. I observed some positive developments. There are some successful meetings in the framework of conflict prevention group”, he added.

As for involvement America in the mission mandate, Peter Semneb stated that Georgian side expects the third side to involve the observer mission.

“It is early to speak about extending mission but involvement of the third side may be discussed. First of all, we should agree that it is necessary for the mission”, the representative of the EU clarified.
