Separatists Reported about Two-Month Pretrial Imprisonment 14 Days Later

November 18, 2009

Georgian side did not have information de-facto Tskhinvali authority sentenced Georgian juvenile detainees to two-month pretrial imprisonment on November 4. “Ossetian side has not informed us about it so far,” said Shota Utiashvili, head of the analytic department of the MIA.

According to Merab Chigoev, deputy representative of the de-facto president of South Ossetia in post-conflicted issues, the Georgian teenagers were resentenced to two months pre-trial detention and they would stay in Tskhinvali detention setting for one month and 20 days. Chigoev did not clarify whether they will release the adults in two months.

According to Chigoev, Tskhinvali is discussing the issue to allow the parents to visit their children in the detention setting. “We are discussing the issue to allow the parents to visit their children or not. Representatives of international committee of Red Cross participate in negotiations and parents can apply to them for help. On the other hand our law enforcement officers will resolve this problem”

It is not estimated yet when the parents will be able to visit their children.

Mother of one of the detainees Eka Buchukuri said they have already applied to the Red Cross International Committee. “We ask them for help each time we meet them. However, they refuse to take us into Tskhinvali because Ossetian side refuses them.”

Four adults from the village of Tirdznisi – Giorgi Romelashvili, Aleko Sabadze, Viktor Buchukuri and Levan Khmiadashvili – were detained by Ossetian militiamen on November 4. Tskhinvali authority blames them for the possession of explosives and illegal crossing of the so-called border.
