The Accused Protest Conditions in Kakheti Region Detention Settings

December 23, 2009

The accused protest their placement in the pre-trial detention setting by the bailiffs of the penitentiary department. On December 22, the accused stated about it after the trials in Telavi and Kvareli district courts.

Public Defender of Georgia Giorgi Tugushi said that based on the judge’s resolution the accused can be placed in the nearest pretrial detention setting during the case discussion.

“It might happen when the court building is far from the penitentiary setting and transportation of the accused is difficult. Penitentiary Ministry is entitled to supervise the accused in the detention settings. The Ministry is obliged to provide normal conditions for the detainees. Most of pretrial detention settings in the regions do not comply with the estimated standards,” said Giorgi Tughushi.
