Nana Khatiskatsi: “Most Alarming Is Oppression on Voters and Activists of Opposition Parties”

May 11, 2010
Program director of the Transparency International –Georgia Nana Khatiskatsi said the most alarming violation during the pre-election campaign is oppression on the voters and activists of the opposition parties. She said similar facts mostly occur in the regions of Georgia.

“More precisely, the members of the opposition parties are compelled to refuse participation in the elections; public servants are compelled to attend the meetings of the ruling party; opposition parties face problems to organize events within pre-election campaign and other facts. For example, candidates from the National Council in the villages of Akhalsopeli and Mtisdziri cancelled their candidatures as a result of the oppression from the Kvareli district governor and head of the police department. Deputy Chairman of the Akhmeta district municipality board and commissary of the Duisi village requested the head of the Akhmeta district organization of the Movement for the Just Georgia Shota Kavtarashvili to stop his political activities and leave the Noghaideli’s party. They visited him at home and threatened during 30 minutes; after that Kavtarashvili needed medical assistance of the emergency service. Many similar facts are described in our report,” said Khatiskatsi.

TI-Georgia published the medieval report of the monitoring of the misuse of the administrative resources during the pre-election campaign today. The report covers the period from March 15 to May 5 of 2010 and is focused on the misuse of the financial, material-technical, administrative and human resources.
