Dimitry Lortkipanidze Requests to React on Hard Conditions of Prisoners

November 9, 2010
MP Dimitry Lortkipanidze from opposition party speaks about hard conditions in the jail hospital for the prisoners sick with tuberculosis and in the so-called quarantine department of the Gldani prison # 8; he called upon the government to pay attention to the problem.

Dimitry Lortkipanidze stated at the plenary session of the parliament on November 9 that the situation is “hardest” in both detention settings and special monitoring group of the parliament should enter there.

According to the MP, the situation in the detention setting of the prisoners sick with tuberculosis is getting harder day by day and 800 inmates are placed there though it is built for 400 people.

As for the situation in the quarantine division of the Gldani prison # 8, Lortkipanidze said that inmates should not spend more than two nights in it; though the detainees spend 14-15 days there.

He said more than 200 detainees are usually placed in the detention setting while it is designed only for 60 inmates.

“I should also add, that former deputy minister of healthcare Koka Pruidze also spent 14 days in such a terrible situation,” added Lortkipanidze and requested both the parliament and the public defender to pay attention to the problem.
