Abkhaz Side Requests Freedom for “Kocho”

February 23, 2011
Abkhaz side requests freedom for Merab Kolbaia (with nickname Kocho), who was suspected in organizing terrorist acts in Georgia. The News Agency Apsni Press reported that representatives of the Sokhumi regime raised the question at the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism Meeting in Gali district yesterday.

Abkhaz side requested the Georgian side to release the resident of Gali district Merab Kolbaia who is blamed in the organization of terrorist acts by Georgian law enforcement officers. The officials of the Sokhumi regime allege that “abduction of Abkhaz citizens” by Georgian special unit officers is sabotage and will destabilize the situation.

At the meeting, Abkhaz side expressed their deep concern about the release of Dato Shengelia, the leader of the armed formation “Forest Brothers” and requested Georgian side to assign him to them. The officials of the Sokhumi regime alleged that Shengelia participated in many grave crimes committed against the so-called Abkhaz citizens; he is often seen at the so-called state border of Abkhazia that causes their serious concern.

The next round of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanisms Meeting will be held on March 22.

On February 17, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia arrested three persons – among them Merab Kolbaia – for the implementation and organization of terrorist acts in Georgia.
