Hillary Clinton’s Statement Is Unprecedented Support

April 20, 2011

Message from Berlin-the author of the statement is US State Secretary Hillary Clinton.

“We support Georgia, particularly in the implementation of the election reforms which should ensure democratic transfer of the authority to a new government for the next 2012 and 2013 elections,” said the US State Secretary during the NATO-Georgia Commission Meeting in Berlin.

Georgian opposition parties evaluated the abovementioned statement of the US State Secretary Hillary Clinton as an unprecedented support for the process which was launched by the Opposition Eight.

Leaders of the National Council Koba Davitashvili and Zviad Dzidziguri responded to Clinton’s statement. Davitashvili called upon the government of Georgia to continue negotiations on the issue. He said the opposition has already taken serious steps to compromise when they gave up their initiative about single mandate system and now it is time for the government to yield about biometric lists.

“This process has huge international support and it creates fertile ground for successful negotiations,” he said. Dzidziguri added that Clinton spoke about peaceful and democratic transfer of the authority in 2012-2013 that is not “simple statement” at all.

In parallel to the diplomatic support, Dzidziguri called upon political parties and civil society to take active part in the election reform process.
