Council of Europe Requests Investigation into the Facts of Use of Excessive Force

May 31, 2011

The spokesmen of the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe Kastriot Islam (Albania) and Michael Aastrup Jensen (Denmark) expressed their discontent towards the fact of use of disproportionate and excessive force while dispersing the protest rally in Tbilisi.

The spokesmen are not putting the question mark on the legitimate grounds of government to disperse the protest rally considering that celebration of independence day was planned at Rustaveli Avenue and according to this information, the protest rally participants refused to move to different spot.

However, the spokesmen expressed their discontent on numerous reports on the use of disproportionate and excessive force by the police.

“We are concerned about the reports of excessive and disproportionate use of force by the police. The authorities should fully, credibly and transparently investigate these reports and present their findings to the public within a reasonable timeframe. In the meanwhile we call upon all sides to remain calm and not to further escalate the tense situation,” –stated the co-rapporteurs.
