The measures, taken by the Georgian government according to the requests of the EU experts, caused increase of meat price at 80%. Georgian Vice-premier Giorgi Baramidze stated at the press-conference “Cooperation for European Future” about it.
“It is a serious problem for the population and the government. I do not think, it is within the EU interests, though we did it because compliance with international standards is more important for us. However, we preferred to increase price step-by-step, throughout one year that could have been less painful,” said Giorgi Baramidze.
Vice-Premier called upon the EU experts to be more careful about similar issues.
“We are not complaining but we would rather implement similar changes gradually. We were compelled to do it due to state interests, but it would have been better if it had happened gradually,” said Baramidze.
He added that the government of Georgia aims to regulate corresponding legislation and fields before signing the agreement on deep and general free trading.
