Mikheil Saakashvili: “I Purchased Country Estate in Kvareli with Mine and My Mother’s Savings”

September 27, 2011

President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili said he purchased the country estate in Kvareli with his and his mother’s savings. The president also spoke about his motivation to purchase the estate in Kvareli. One of the reasons is his wish to be close to Maro Chavchavadze’s grave, who was her teacher.

“The president’s salary does allow me to purchase the estate. I paid 33 thousand GEL in total; it was mine and my mother’s savings. We have several thousand governmental officials who can take loan from bank and purchase similar estate; but I want every citizen of Georgia to afford similar procurement,” said Mikheil Saakashvili in his interview with the Imedi TV’s Special Reportage.

The President added that Kvareli is paradise though he admitted that he has not deserved paradise yet.

“I decided to purchase an estate in Kvareli for several reasons. Here we are implementing a lot of projects; we have renovated Lopota, Kvareli Lake, Kvareli center; the first corn-plantation was seeded here, it is Ilia Chavchavadze’s estate. I said I wanted to have an estate in Kvareli. It is paradise though I have not deserved paradise yet. Maro Chavchavadze was buried in Kvareli Church; she was the most important teacher for me; she taught me not only French but history, culture and freedom, love of my country; so being close to Maro Chavchavadze’s grave is very important for me,” said Mikheil Saakashvili.

President of Georgia purchased half hectare of vineyard on Duruji River embankment in Kvareli from Tamaz Jokharidze. President’s spokesperson Manana Manjgaladze said several days ago that the price of the vineyard was 33 000 GEL; the construction of the house in the estate cost 45 thousand GEL. “The total space of the building is 60 sq. meters. The president choose Saperavi vine for the production of his wine; Marani was located in the basement of the house,” said Manjgaladze.

Information about the President’s procurement was announced on September 12. Then, Saakashvili invited excellent first-year students to his estate and served them with Georgian Shashlik.
