On September 28, Human Rights Center petitioned the Chief Prosecutor of Georgia, Murtaz Zodelava, and Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance of Georgia, Giorgi Tugushi. Human Rights Center informed Zodelava and Tugushi that the Center protects the rights of the convicted people who were tortured and inhumanly treated in the penitentiary institution.
Although investigation has been going on into such cases for several years, it has not had any outcome; in addition, we would like to underline that investigation of all these cases was launched under Article 333 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (abuse of power) and not under the article about torture. The reason for putting these cases on the shelf was that senior officials personally participated in the torture of prisoners and they influenced the ongoing investigation process.
Human Rights Center requests that a full and impartial investigation of these criminal cases is conducted.
